Small business marketing consultant in Sydney - have you heard of ‘services marketing’?

We all heard of the term ‘business marketing’ but have you heard of ‘services marketing’? Read on to find out all you, small business owners, need to know about marketing services.

First of all, what is service? It is an action of performing something for someone or something. The nature of service is predominantly intangible, thus it is crucial for service providers to use physical evidences to ‘back up’ the benefit or value of their services.

There are four key features in services and it is extremely crucial to bear that in mind when developing marketing strategies.

Service is perishable, which means it can’t be stored. For instance, a hotel can’t store the empty room nights today and sell tomorrow. Thus, in order to breakeven, some hotels offer last minute deals and at lower rates.

Service varies. Why so? Because there is human involvement for a service to be performed, thus, no two service experience is identical as well. For example, last month John, service provider, gave you a haircut and you love it. But somehow this month, you went back to him again and didn’t like it at all, because he accidentally shaves off your sideburns.

Service is inseparable, it can only be delivered when the service provider provides and the consumer consumes at the same time. For example, a live concert, the experience is only possible when the singer starts singing and you listen at the same time. It is impossible to bring home a ‘live concert’ unless it is the concert DVD, which it is a product, not a service.

As mentioned above, services are intangible where one cannot taste, feel or touch. For instance, you cannot taste or touch a marketing consultation session.
