Small business marketing consultant in Sydney - dos and don’ts of SMS marketing

SMS marketing is something that you either do really well or fail really badly. Either ways, it affects your business and reputation. Thus here are some dos and don’ts tips that small business owners should avoid when sending texts to their customers.

1. Texts doesn’t mean casual.
Do maintain a professional tone when sending texts to customers; after all you are a business selling products and services. Be positive and use words like “please” as well as “thanks”.

2. Refrain using text languages.
Try not to use text languages as it is not being professional and customers might actually be annoyed. Instead of using “u”, type it in the full form, “you”.

3. No essays, it’s a short message.
SMS is a “quick” marketing tool, meaning your customers open it and reads it for seconds. Thus, keep things short and sweet. Having an in-store sale? Just tell them straight, go to the point. Try sending texts under 160 characters like a Twitter post.

4. Check and check and check.
Like any other marketing materials, proofread and check if links are working. Imagine an interested customer who clicks on the link but it can’t work, such a turn off. He or she might just wave goodbye to you and your business.

5. Timing is key.
Send texts when you yourself want to receive. You don’t want to receive a marketing text during sleeping hours so don’t send it too late at night or too early in the morning. The safest time is business hours.

Before you send texts to customers make sure you gain their permission. Some customers do not like receiving texts from people other than their friends or families as texts are seen as something relatively personal.
